Camie’s Story
Camie had never felt more like an outsider than she did in this group discussion. She was the only one who didn’t belong to this culture, and her groupmates were chatting about things she had never heard of.
She felt so distant from them. So, when someone turned to her and asked, “What do you think?” , she couldn’t bring herself to say a word. She felt all words lost in her throat, even though she really had some good ideas for the project.
“I must look nerdy and dumb…”
She couldn’t help but degrade herself in mind. She knew that she needed to be confident, but that was easier said than done. A contradiction swirled within her — she wanted to join the conversation, to contribute, but it felt as if her throat was clenched shut, trapping every syllable.
She sighed and excused herself.
In the restroom, she splashed cold water on her face, trying to calm down. Staring at her own reflection in the mirror, a wave of loneliness and confusion washed over her.
“No…”
She thought.
“I’m not that bad.”
